Summer Games begin tomorrow, end Saturday

ANTIGONISH, N.S. - The Special Olympics Canada 2018 Summer Games begin tomorrow (July 31) in Antigonish and organizers are putting out an 11th hour request for additional volunteers for the national event.

“If you haven’t been contacted and are on the waiting list, please call 902-867-4969,” volunteer manager Lynn Delorey said on the morning of July 30.

“And if you have some spare time, and you have a few extra shifts you can give us, we need some volunteers to fill in some extra spots that have recently opened up” she added.

And that goes for folks who haven’t made themselves known to organizers yet as well; they can give Delorey and the other folks coordinating volunteers a call at the previously listed number.

Delorey was asked about the large form found on the event’s website (so2018.specialolympicsns) which is required to be filled out by volunteers.

“Not for this last call,” she said. “Those would have been for medical, security, people who were put in high profile positions; but, for this, no. We need people serving up food, we need people giving out information to families - sending them on their way here, there and everywhere, passing out maps of the (St. F.X.) campus … that is what we need.”

The Games take place starting tomorrow and wrap-up Saturday, Aug. 4.

Most sporting events take place on the university campus but some of the action is hosted at other Antigonish locations, such as the Antigonish Golf and Country Club and the recently upgraded ballfields which are adjacent to Dr. J.H. Regional High School on Breamore Avenue.
